Laser Plastic Welding Made Even More Efficient
Laser plastic welding has long been acknowledged as an extremely economical joining process. Hence its prevalence within virtually every sector of industry.
As specialised developers and manufacturers of tailor-made systems for laser welding plastics, Evosys prides itself on its policy of innovation. With various awards to its credit including being named TOP 100 Innovation Champion in 2020, it is certainly right to do so.
Processing times cut
Evosys’s latest innovation makes use of the absorption properties of plastics. It combines two different wavelengths that are alternatively guided over the welding zone in a controllable pattern.
Evosys has called this patented process Advanced Quasi-Simultaneous Welding (AQW). In numerous tests series, plastic welding times have shown to be reduced significantly in many cases.
As the graph here shows, when welding a material combination of PC natural and PC black, the AQW process reduced the welding time of over 3.4 seconds for a standard process with primary radiation to 3.1 seconds. In series production, when welding volumes are high, this could make a considerable saving on production times.
Series production
Running parallel to the patent granting process, the system technology necessary for the AQW process was developed and optimised for series production use.
Used on selected plastics, AQW is a development of Quasi-Simultaneous Welding, a frequently used variant of laser plastic welding. In this robust and economical process, the weld seam is traced several times at high speed with a focused laser beam. All areas of the weld seam are heated and melted almost simultaneously i.e. quasi-simultaneously. AQW adds extra dimensions of speed and efficiency to this process.
TLM can arrange for existing Evosys customers to test the AQW process at Evosys’s Technical Centre. For further information and details about this patented innovation, please contact sales@tlm-laser.com
