ArtCAM® Has Stopped Working? Why 2026 Signals the End – and How Carveco Provides a Supported Future
For many UK manufacturers, makers, and CNC-driven businesses, ArtCAM® was a core production tool. It shaped workflows in woodworking, stone, signage, laser engraving, mould making, and decorative manufacturing for decades.
That is why an increasing number of users are now finding themselves searching for answers after discovering that ArtCAM® has stopped working, often due to an expired PAF file. In many cases, this happens without warning, bringing production to an abrupt halt.
What we are seeing across the UK and Ireland is not isolated or unusual. It is the final stage of a process that began back in 2018 when ArtCAM® was discontinued and now users are seeking a long-term alternative and a replacement for ArtCAM®.

What Happened to ArtCAM®?
ArtCAM® was officially discontinued by Autodesk in 2018. When this happened, existing customers were allowed to continue using their installed versions, but with a critical limitation: ArtCAM® became unsupported overnight.
From that point forward:
- Autodesk no longer maintained licence servers or activation infrastructure
- PAF licence files could no longer be renewed or reissued
- No updates were released for operating system compatibility or stability
- No technical support pathway remained
At the time, many businesses understandably chose to continue using ArtCAM® as long as it remained functional. For years, this approach appeared viable. However, many legacy PAF files were issued with long-term expiry dates, and those dates are now being reached.
Why Are ArtCAM® PAF Files Expiring Now?
The PAF file is the licence file that allows ArtCAM® to run. Once a PAF file reaches its expiry date, the software becomes inactive and cannot be restarted.
Crucially, because ArtCAM® is proprietary Autodesk technology:
- Expired PAF files cannot be renewed
- No replacement licence files can be issued
- No technical workaround exists
- No company has the legal or technical ability to intervene
This is why so many users are now discovering that ArtCAM® has stopped working, often on systems that have been stable for years. With many PAF files expiring in or around 2026, this issue is accelerating rapidly. At this stage, ArtCAM® is officially over.
From ArtCAM® to Carveco: A Direct Line of Development
Carveco is the direct successor to ArtCAM®, developed by many of the same engineers who originally built ArtCAM® itself. It is a continuation of the same design philosophy and workflows, modernised for current systems and expectations, along with additional features and functionality, which now include Carveco AI.
While Carveco does not own or control ArtCAM® licences and cannot repair or extend PAF files, it exists to give existing ArtCAM® users a supported and future-proof alternative to the discontinued ArtCAM®.
Since its launch in 2019, Carveco has been adopted by thousands of former ArtCAM® users who needed continuity without abandoning familiar working methods and TLM Laser are able to offer a discount to the various Carveco software packages.
Understanding the Carveco Software Range
One of the strengths of Carveco is that its product structure closely mirrors the tiered approach that ArtCAM® users were already familiar with. This makes selecting an equivalent upgrade far more straightforward.
| Legacy ArtCAM® | Carveco Equivalent |
| ArtCAM® Pro | Carveco Pro |
| ArtCAM® Insignia | Carveco Maker+ |
| ArtCAM® Express | Carveco Maker |
Purchasing one of the Carveco products via the links below automatically provides you with one of TLM Laser’s 5% Discount codes. Alternatively, if you would like to speak to one of our experts, then fill in our contact form, to find out how we can further support your ArtCAM® replacement.
Carveco Pro – Replacement to ArtCAM® Pro
Carveco Pro is the most comprehensive offering in the Carveco range and is designed for professional and industrial environments where complex design, advanced toolpaths, and high levels of control are required.
It provides full 3D relief design, advanced modelling tools, and powerful manufacturing strategies suitable for demanding CNC workflows. This makes it particularly relevant for businesses working in stone, wood, mould making, signage, engraving, and decorative manufacturing where ArtCAM® Pro was previously central to production.
For former ArtCAM® Pro users, Carveco Pro represents the most direct continuation of capability, with the benefit of modern performance, ongoing development, and full technical support.

Carveco Maker+ – Replacement to ArtCAM® Insignia
Carveco Maker+ sits between Maker and Pro, offering a strong balance of creative flexibility and manufacturing functionality. It is well suited to small businesses, workshops, and professional makers who require relief modelling and production-ready outputs but do not need the full depth of Pro-level complexity.
For users who previously relied on ArtCAM® Insignia, Maker+ provides a familiar workflow with improved stability and modernised tools, allowing existing design approaches to be maintained while removing reliance on unsupported software.

Carveco Maker – Replacement to ArtCAM® Express
Carveco Maker is aimed at entry-level users, hobbyists, and smaller operations that need reliable CAD/CAM capability without the overhead of advanced industrial features.
It is the natural progression for former ArtCAM® Express users, providing a supported platform for 2D and basic 3D work while remaining accessible and cost-effective. Importantly, it still benefits from the same active development and compatibility advantages as the wider Carveco range.

Can Carveco Open Legacy ArtCAM® Files?
In most cases, yes.
Carveco is capable of opening the majority of legacy ArtCAM® files, including files created in much older versions such as ArtCAM® Pro 2008. While no software can guarantee absolute compatibility with every historical file ever produced, most ArtCAM® users are able to continue working with their existing data inside Carveco.
For businesses with large libraries of historical designs, this continuity is often the deciding factor when upgrading.
Moving Beyond ArtCAM®: AI-Assisted Design in Carveco
One of the most significant differences between legacy ArtCAM® and modern Carveco is the introduction of AI-assisted design tools.
These tools are designed to support creative workflows by accelerating tasks such as relief generation and concept development. Rather than replacing skilled design input, Carveco AI helps reduce repetitive manual work and speeds up early-stage design processes, particularly for artistic and decorative applications.
For former ArtCAM® users, this represents a meaningful step forward in productivity and capability.
Why a Supported Upgrade Matters Now
Continuing to rely on expired or failing ArtCAM® installations introduces increasing operational risk. As operating systems evolve and licence files expire, downtime becomes unavoidable rather than hypothetical.
Carveco, by contrast, is:
- Actively developed and maintained
- Compatible with modern operating systems
- Designed to preserve established ArtCAM® workflows
- Supported by a dedicated technical support team
Upgrading ensures that your software, files, and production environment remain viable for the long term.
Upgrading from ArtCAM® with TLM Laser
TLM Laser is the official Carveco distributor for the UK and Ireland, supporting businesses that are now forced to address the reality of ArtCAM®’s end-of-life.
We work with former ArtCAM® users across a wide range of industries, including CNC manufacturing, stone processing, woodworking, signage, engraving, and laser-based applications. Our role is to help businesses transition with clarity and confidence.
This includes advising on the most appropriate Carveco product, supporting migration from ArtCAM®, and providing localised support, pricing guidance, and trial access where appropriate.
For many businesses, ArtCAM® has stopped working simply because it has finally reached the end of a legacy system’s lifespan, and that is out of everyone’s control. Our role is to help you move forward without unnecessary disruption.
ArtCAM®’s discontinuation in 2018 set a clock ticking. With PAF files now expiring in large numbers, that clock has effectively run out. If your ArtCAM® has stopped working and you want that transition handled by a knowledgeable, UK-based distributor who understands both the software and the industries that rely on it, TLM Laser is here to help.
